Trust Kareena Kapoor to be brutally honest and she delivers just that! In a no holds barred interview, the actress opens up about her upcoming film ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’, social media negativity and the popularity that her son Taimur Ali Khan enjoys, among many other things. Excerpts:

What kind of parallels do you draw between ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ and ‘Forrest Gump’?
‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ is an original adaptation of ‘Forrest Gump’, so the characters have just been Indianised. But the story is exactly the same. We are calling it the original adaptation. Aamir and I have brought in what we thought could in the characters. So yeah it’s going to be an emotional ride. Something that everyone of course is waiting to watch. We are obviously waiting in anticipation of how people would react to this beautiful film.

How would you describe the journey of shooting for ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’?
Rupa’s character is everything me. I have lived with the character. The film has been shot over three years, we’ve had Covid in between and there were two lockdowns, but I think the way Aamir and I have lived with it, I think hopefully people will say it’s one of our best.

Two years of Covid, everybody was stuck at home and people turned to streaming platforms for entertainers. Some people may have stumbled upon ‘Forrest Gump’ online. What do you have to say to those who have watched the original?

‘Forrest Gump’ is an English film, the classists and elitist would have watched it. I don’t think everybody across India would have watched it. So this is a film which is from the heart. People will watch the film because they like the trailer, the music, songs. The English speaking audience would know that it is ‘Forrest Gump’, but you watch the film as a whole to enjoy a cinematic experience. So ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ promises to be a family film, so you can enjoy it and enjoy the entire cinematic experience.

You have always been a risk taker, a norm breaker and a change maker…
I don’t look at it like I was the first to do it and there is no calculated move that this is going to be the first, or that is going to be the first. I don’t think that’s the case. I have always done what actually my heart wanted, what I thought is right for my life and I am happy that in some ways that has set an example to young girls or married women, who want to work with children, who want to work and I think that has happened very subconsciously. I am actually just living my life the way I think.

It’s been 22 years in the industry and you have played such iconic characters like Geet, Poo and many others. Do you think Rupa will join the league?
Rupa has a charm in herself and if you see Jenny from ‘Forrest Gump’, she was not all black and white, she was quite grey. Rupa in her way is slightly a grey character but of course I think it’s a very brave and iconic character. It’s a character that gives a lot of hope to people. And of course this character is not like the earlier ones, it cannot be under the same umbrella because the idea is to keep evolving and trying to do different things.

They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. So when Kareena Kapoor Khan is imitated how does she take that?
I’m not that good with taking compliments from people. I get happy if people get inspired by me, whether it’s my characters or me in my real life. I am a very positive person and I think people get attracted to that. I am the kind of a person who is always happy and when I am around people I want to be around happy people, because that is the kind of energy I feed of and I give that kind of energy. It’s so important to ultimately feel happy. I feel that we only have one life and one should give it all and just enjoy every minute of it rather than thinking what is going to happen all the time. If anyone is trying to copy you, so you’re just positive about it, right?

Does Hollywood interest you?
I have actually never thought about that because my priorities are slightly different. I have two children, I have a lot of responsibility here and it is not something like I can just get up and go. My life and my journey is on a different path but with cinema going global, ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ posters are all over London. People are watching, like all friends are messaging that we have seen posters all over. So today it’s not about being in Hollywood. Indian films are being watched all over across the globe, dubbed in different languages and now with the OTT platforms I think people are tuning in and watching a lot of our movies, a lot of our shows which also feels amazing.

Who are keen to work with form the South?
I think they all are amazing and their cinema is quite ahead of times. Their stories, their connectivity with the audiences and the fans is on different level. So I would want to work with all of them. If anybody has an amazing part for me I’d love to do it.

Taimur is paparazzi’s favourite kid. What does he tell you about this media attention?
He doesn’t like it. The idea is that his parents are famous. He tells me that you and abba are famous but why do they like taking my pictures. Because I am not famous. And I told him that yes you’re not famous, you are no one; so he is still figuring that why they’re taking his pictures. Of course he gets a little rattled, he’s just five and a half and he’s been constantly clicked but we’ve also been open about it because I can’t go and stop it. Everybody looks at him like a star. But he’s not a star, he’s an innocent kid, he has no idea about it as long as he gets to live his life. I think he’s quite a chilled guy, he kind of understands he’s quite ahead of his age. Also now, he can sit and have conversations like his father is explaining something to him, he’s bright so let’s see I hope he gets to enjoy his life the way he wants.

Saif and you are also pretty chill about it and you don’t tell the paps to back off and that’s again very positive about you…
As much as they should learn to respect us, I can’t constantly keep telling them the same thing. And I think they should also have a certain kind of respect, as we give them a lot of respect. I’m not stopping them from taking any pictures of my kids. So they should understand there is also a line that has to be drawn. So when you get your pictures of them coming out from the airport or wherever, constantly clicking them is something that I don’t like. But I think they’ve kind of understood that. So we have this equation with the paparazzi. I think they also respect the fact that we have given them that picture, so now they can back off. I really appreciate the fact that they do that.

‘Boycott Laal Singh Chaddha’ has become a trend on the internet…
It is completely bizarre. Please don’t boycott ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’, it’s a beautiful film. Aamir and I and everyone have worked so hard to bring this to the cinema. It is cinematic experience, so please watch the film.

Is there any biopic on your bucket list?
I haven’t really ever thought of one. In fact, I haven’t been ever offered one. Maybe on me somebody will play it. Who knows? I am open to it. I am open to any kind of role if it’s a good script. Doesn’t really have to be a biopic and it can be any kind of film.

What is your take on pictures being edited for beautification?
I constantly tell my team, whenever I take pictures, that please don’t Photoshop. Everyone knows the way I am. in fact on my Instagram, I don’t do anything. I am just the way I am.
