Mumbai:
A man was taken into custody by the Mumbai police today for issuing threats to Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) chairman Mukesh Ambani and his family, officials have said.
The man, identified as Afzal, had made three-four threat calls on a landline number at the Reliance Foundation Hospital in Mumbai’s Girgaon this morning, officials said.
The suspect was traced after the police identified the phone number from which he had made the calls, officials said.
A preliminary investigation suggests the caller is mentally unstable.
A case has been registered and the man is currently being questioned by the police.
Last month, the Supreme Court had ruled that Mukesh Ambani and his family in Mumbai can continue to have security provided by the central government, dismissing a petition challenging the provision.
The centre had approached the Supreme Court after the Tripura High Court had accepted a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against the government security cover to the Ambanis.
Mr Ambani and his family were given security cover by the Maharashtra government based on an evaluation of threat perception by the centre.
Earlier, an abandoned car was found with explosives near Mr Ambani’s home last year, unravelling a major conspiracy that involved former policemen.
